WELCOME TO SWIMMING 2009

Folks, on behalf of the Fraser Valley Secondary Schools Athletic Association, I want to welcome you to the season. Thank you to all the volunteers who work to make sure the student athletes’ season is fun and enriching. There have been some changes from the way a few things have been done in the past so we would encourage you to read everything on the web site, even if you’ve been running your school team for a long time. There is also an issue found on this site that will have an impact on the 2010 season. Please read on!!!!!!!!!!

Highlights of the web site include:

-         There will be only one meet hosted by the Fraser Valley Region this year. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATE OF THIS MEET IS NOVEMBER 5TH, 2009. It was decided that it was becoming too difficult to obtain a full team of volunteers at the Upper Valley Meet and we decided to ease the burden for all the volunteers, including the team managers and coaches. Another influence was the fact that hosting only one meet will save each school some money in terms of substitute teachers, meet entry fees and transportation costs. Based on previous years’ registrations, we believe this change should not add too much time to the day and any time added is more than compensated for by the reduction in the number of days away from the classroom. Please note that there have been qualifying times added to the events list in an effort to keep the length of the meet manageable.

-         Meet Entries procedures. We are no longer able to register for the swim meet on line. See the more detailed information here MEET ENTRIES PROCEDURES.doc.

-         Athlete eligibility. High level water polo players who practice and/ or compete for more than 2 hours per week must now be registered in the “Open” category. Please refer to the meet package.Meet Package Complete 2009 (revised 20 Oct 09).doc

-         Rules. The wording has been amended from last year to reflect the changes that follow from dropping the Upper and Lower Valley qualifiers. Please refer to the meet package .Meet Package Complete 2009 (revised 20 Oct 09).doc

-         SWAD swimmers. Yes, athletes with a disability were included for the first time in the 2008 season but there were none registered in the Fraser Valley Region and we’re hoping to have some join us this year. Please ask around your schools and encourage them to participate.

-         Costs. We were asked by the Fraser Valley Secondary Schools Athletic Association to reduce the size of the swimming commission bank account a bit so for this one year only, the meet entry fees have been cut in half from the costs of last year.

Finally, we have added copies of the letters from the BC High School Sports governing body regarding cuts to funding from the Province of BC and the results they expect from that action, commentary from the provincial swim commission on the availability of Scholarships and a comment on succession planning for the zone.

Good luck to all athletes.
